ES: As a senior nearing the end of my time here, I am struck by how it's flown by. What advice do you have for making the most of the college experience?

SLB: Resist FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out. Especially coming out of the pandemic, it's important to be present. I would urge students to pick classes and extracurriculars in a way that gives them time just to be. And to think. We know from psychology that when those great ideas come, it's when you're stepping back. It's when you're not banging your head against the wall. Dartmouth does a really good job of creating opportunities for students to take that step back. But we could all do a little more of that.

ES: You are one of the world's experts in the brain science behind "choking under pressure." You have explored this subject in business, in education, in sports. Tell me about your book Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting it Right When You Have To, as well as your TED Talk. It has been viewed more than million times, and one of those viewers was me.

SLB: Many of those views were my mother! Seriously, if you take anything away from my research, it's that how we think matters. And how we prepare matters. W

Sian Leah Beilock, Dartmouth’s first female president, is inaugurated

Sian Leah Beilock was inaugurated at p.m. today, becoming Dartmouth’s 19th president and the College’s first female leader in its year history.

With Beilock’s appointment, Dartmouth became the seventh of the eight Ivy League institutions to be led by a female president.

According to College media relations strategist Jana Barnello, over 1, community members attended the inauguration ceremony, an event featuring speeches from alumni, Beilock’s former colleagues, faculty trustees and students. 

In her address to the College, Beilock pledged reform to campus on what she said were “five key areas of focus.” 

“Mental health, brave spaces, Dartmouth for life, action on climate, breakthrough innovation,” Beilock said. “This is my vision; these are our aspirations; and this is my call to action for you.”

Beilock announced plans to reform several of her outlined areas of interest. Regarding mental health, Beilock said the College would be unveiling a “comprehensive plan” on well-being in the next two weeks. Sian Beilock is a cognitive scientist by training and serves as the 19th President of Dartmouth. She previously served as the eighth president of Barnard College at Columbia University.

At Barnard, she had responsibility for all aspects of the College, including establishing and carrying out the College’s strategic vision; budget; fundraising; and faculty, staff and students. During the first three years of her tenure, she raised Barnard’s eminence in math, science and technology to parallel its renown in the arts and humanities; created options for students to transition directly from Barnard into a range of master’s programs at Columbia; and worked to bridge the gap between college and professional life through the innovative Beyond Barnard office. She was dedicated to ensuring that Barnard continues to attract a highly diverse student body deeply engaged with all that the College and New York City have to offer.

Prior to her appointment at Barnard, Beilock served at the University of Chicago as Executive Vice Provost, the Stella M. Rowley Professor of Psychology, and an Officer of the University.
