His first acting experience was in the theater as an amateur artist, however, he was fortunate to be spotted by a talent scout and later trained under the tutors of notable names such as Michael Chekhov and Maria Ouspenskaya. He made his big screen debut on the set of The Blame of Janet Ames which was released in Until his death he appeared in several films and series such as; Bonanza (), Gunsmoke (), The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams () and The Dukes of Hazzard ().

But, after his vengeful sheriff in Bonnie and Clyde, he got away from all that, helped by a stint in TV's The Dorris Day Show, and reappeared as benevolent westerners, in harmony with their surroundings. Had his first leading role in in Guardian of the Wilderness.
