River Red Gum, Valley of the Winds Walk, Kata-Tjuta
River Red Gums, or Eucalyptus Camaldulensis, are among our most ubiquitous of gum trees, but that doesnt mean theyre a boring tree. As their name implies they grow along watercourses including ones that are very very dry such as those you find in Central Australia. They are also a significant part of what makes the Murray River such a gorgeous old river. Apparently, though, they are not found in Tasmania.
One of the well-known places to see these gums is the beautiful Barmah Forest of the Murray-Darling Basin. It boasts trees that are over years old. Sadly, though, there are concerns that due to the extended drought that area has been experiencing, many trees are threatened, if not already dying. Ive been to this forest and it is a treasure it would be tragic to lose it.
Being ubiquitous and beautiful they feature regularly in Australian arts (in poetry, song, fiction, and art). Of course, they feature in Murray Bails captivating novella Eucalyptus:

With a mischievous smile, Damien Wright gives the exhibit an unceremonious kick. The enormous, curved slab of river red gum rocks back and forth on the gallery floor, casting a wavering shadow over the ‘Do Not Touch’ sign at its base. A couple of anxious visitors shuffle over to investigate as Damien tells me how he made this wobbling wooden bowl, and why he chooses to work with the hardest, most challenging timbers.
The river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) once grew on the banks of the Murray River. Damien discovered the thick slab in a miller’s yard in Wodonga, where it had lain exposed to the elements for years, slowly warping in the heat. What others had dismissed as damaged wood, Damien saw as creative possibility: he relished the opportunity to work with wood that had been ‘cooked, cured and crazed by the sun’. In his workshop in Northcote, Melbourne, he worked to accentuate the warp in the wood by curving the edges of the slab, creating a long, bowing channel, almost three metres long and over a metre wide. Like all his work, this object is an argument he has made with his hands. The rough, red, cracking grain of the wood runs length-ways across the piece, like gul

The River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is a widespread native across all mainland Australia. It is one of Australias iconic trees, a widespread tree found along watercourse and frequently a dominant part of riparian (situated on the banks of a river) communities.
With the most widespread natural distribution of any eucalypt species in Australia, the River Red Gum is often the main species of many river and catchment areas such as the the Murray-Darling catchment and the ephemeral rivers and creeks of Central Australia such as in the Todd River and Finke River systems. In Central Australia, some are recorded as years old, and can reach ages of to 1, years.1
