Maillet
Born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, in the heart of Acadia, Antonine Maillet received her PhD in literature in from the Université de Laval. As well as her 17 plays and monologues and many translations, she is the author of over 20 novels. While writing and lecturing are Maillet’s main occupations, she is also often called upon to represent Acadia both here in North America and internationally. She has received more than 15 literary prizes, including the prestigious Prix Goncourt for her novel Pélagie-la-Charrette and has been awarded 31 honorary doctorates. Among other titles and honours, Antonine Maillet is a member of the Royal Society of Canada, Companion of the Order of Canada and an officer of the Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur de France. She lives in Montreal.

Her publisher, Lemeac, announced the news Monday on social media, saying the author had died overnight at her home in Montreal.
Born in New Brunswick, she became the first Canadian writer to receive the prestigious French literary award Prix Goncourt in for her novel “Pelagie-la-Charette.” Throughout her career her work was deeply inspired by the history, language, folklore, and traditions of the Acadian people, with more than 20 novels and 12 plays to her name.

Après une vie passée à raconter les histoires et les gens de son Acadie natale, l’autrice de La Sagouine s’est éteinte paisiblement dans la nuit du 17 février à son domicile de Montréal, a confirmé sa maison d’édition, Leméac. Elle avait 95 ans.
En plus d’avoir écrit plus d’une cinquantaine de titres – romans, contes, pièces de théâtre et essais – traduits en de nombreuses langues, Antonine Maillet a été récompensée à de nombreuses reprises durant sa carrière d’écrivaine, notamment par le prestigieux prix Goncourt, en , qu’elle a été la première non-Européenne et la seule Canadienne à ce jour à avoir remporté.
En novembre dernier, elle avait assisté au dévoilement d’un timbre à son effigie au Salon du livre de Montréal.
