Mary Hayley Bell, Lady Mills, was an English actress and writer. She was born in Shanghai, China, where her father served in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and she spent her early childhood in Macao. After several years in English boarding schools, she lived with her family in Hong Kong from , after which they moved to Tianjin (then known as Tientsin). In the family returned to London, where she began her stage career. In she married actor John Mills; the marriage was to last for 64 years until his death in After , they lived in Denham, Buckinghamshire, until their deaths in

IN A remarkable theatrical family Mary Hayley Bell tended to be overshadowed by her husband, John Mills, and their daughters, Juliet and Hayley. Yet while she was happy to fulfil the traditional roles of wife and mother, and did so with unswerving loyalty and affection, she managed a not inconsiderable career of her own.
She had started in the theatre as an actress but became better known for writing plays than appearing in them. She was nothing if not prolific. Working from a caravan at the bottom of the garden at the family home in Richmond, Surrey, at one time she was turning out a play a year.
Not all reached the West End and some were not even accepted for production. Among the disappointments, however, were tangible successes, especially when her husband was the leading man. He starred in Men in Shadow (), Duet for Two Hands gave him a long London run in and eight years later he was with Joan Greenwood in The Uninvited Guest, an excursion into Victorian madness which required him to sport a blazing red wig.
She continued to write plays until the early s when, after her latest effort had been rejected, she decided that the theatre no longer wanted her. In the me

Bell, who was married to actor and director John Mills and was the mother of actress Hayley Mills, was known in the s for her plays. She later turned to novels, including Whistle down the Wind (), which was later adapted as a successful film. The daughter of a British army colonel, Bell spent her first years in China but was later sent to England to complete her education at the Malvern Girls' College. She then studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Bell began acting professionally in the early s, first appearing in a production of The Barretts of Wimpole Street in China. She would also appear in other roles on London's West End, in New York City, and in Australia. After marrying Mills in , however, Bell switched from acting to writing. She found great success with her first plays, Men in Shadow () and Duet for Two Hands ().
