Biography
Saint Noël Chabanel, also known as Father Noel Chabanel, was born on February 2, , in Saugues, France. He was the son of a notary and grew up as one of four children in his family. As a young man, Noël entered the Jesuit novitiate in Toulouse, France on February 8, , to pursue a religious vocation. After completing his novitiate, Noël served as a college teacher in Toulouse from to During this time, he deepened his knowledge and understanding of various subjects, including rhetoric. In , Noël was ordained as a priest and subsequently taught rhetoric at the college of Rodez. However, Noël, like many other Jesuits, felt a strong calling to engage in missionary work. In , he embarked on a journey to New France (present-day Canada) to serve as a missionary to the Hurons. He arrived in Quebec on August 15 of that year. Life in the mission fields proved to be extremely challenging for Father Noël. He struggled to grasp the languages spoken by the native Hurons, detested the unfamiliar food, and could never fully adapt to the living conditions. Noel Chabanel was born on February 2, in Sauges, France, the youngest of four children of a notary. He entered the Society of Jesus in , at age seventeen. He was ordained a priest in and taught rhetoric at a college. Noel was described in the Jesuit Catalogue for his province as “serious by nature &#; energetic &#; great stability &#; better than average intelligence.” Having read the accounts of the Jesuit missionaries in Canada (called New France at the time), he felt inspired to become a missionary as well. Noél Chabanel () was a successful professor and humanist in his native France, but he fervently wanted to be a missionary in New France and prayed to be accepted as a martyr. Once he finally reached the land of the native peoples, the reality of a missionary's life made him want to be anywhere else because he found the language incomprehensible and the native way of living revolting. Nevertheless, he embraced the difficulty by deciding to remain in the missions, even though superiors gave him permission to return to France. He saw his presence in the missions as God's will and vowed to remain firm, no matter how difficult it proved to be.
He traveled with the veteran missionary, Father John de Brébeuf from the winter of on, and worked among the Algonquins at Sainte Marie until he was sent to Etarita in the fall of to assist Father Garnier. Chabanel stayed at Etarita only a few weeks before Garnier judged the situation too dangerous and sent him back to mission headquarters. His escape from danger did not last long. He left Etarita on Dec. 5 and spent two nights at a nearby mission, and then set out with a party of Hurons on Dec. 7 on a difficult trek thr

Noël Chabanel entered the noviciate at Toulouse on 9 Feb. He taught in the college of that city (–39), studied theology there (–41), and did his third probationary year there (–42). After teaching rhetoric at the college of Rodez, he arrived at Quebec on 15 Aug. , spent one year there, and then went on to the Huron country.
Of the eight Canadian martyrs, he is the only one who had no flair for the study of languages. A brilliant teacher of rhetoric in France, he felt an inexpressible loathing for the ways and customs of the Indians. “Never, for all that,” writes Father Paul Ragueneau, “would he break away from the Cross on which God had placed him; never did he ask that he might come down from it. On the contrary, in order to bind himself to it more inviolably, he obliged himself, by a vow, to remain there till death, so that he might die upon the Cross.” The Relation for has preserved for us the wording of this heroic vow.
