On October 15th, , the membership of the Carlebach Shul endorsed the Board&#;s decision to appoint Rabbi Naftali Citron as our new rabbi. Rabbi Citron assumed full-time responsibilities immediately following Pesach.
Immediately before coming to the Carlebach Shul, Rabbi Citron served as the spiritual leader of the Highland Lakes Shul located in Aventura, Florida. Under his leadership, that synagogue has become one of the more dynamic Orthodox Jewish institutions in the South Florida region. At Highland Lakes, Reb Naftali established numerous classes, events and programs leading to almost a tripling of its membership in four years. Reb Naftali&#;s approach to Judaism is infused with a joyful spirituality in the service of G-d inspired by the legacy of his late grandfather, Reb Eli Chaim Carlebach, zt&#;l, and his late great-uncle, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, zt&#;l.
Since assuming the pulpit once held by his grandfather and great-uncle, Reb Naftali has brought an energy level to our shul not felt here in many years. On any given friday evening, the crowd is standing-room only. The long, narrow sanctuary often overflows with up to people: On one side of the paneledmehitza, the women gather, some in head coverings and long skirts, others bareheaded and in pants. The men wear suits or jeans and T-shirts—and even a smattering of Hasidicstreimels (fur hats) and stringed robes.
Wealthy or homeless, seekers or grounded in tradition, worshipers are drawn to the Carlebach Shul, as Congregation Kehilath Jacob in New York is affectionately known, because of the musical and spiritual legacy of its renowned leader, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.
Fourteen years after Carlebach’s death of a heart attack at age 69—he died on October 20, —his influence borders on a grass-roots movement, complete with its own music, legends, minyanim, yeshiva, conferences and legions of disciples who count him as one of the world’s 36 hidden righteous people. From Russia to Singapore, in most synagogues in America and in Israel, Carlebach’s music is everywhere, even when the people singing it don’t know it is his or even who he was, transforming places of prayer into vibrant spiritual happenings
Today is the yahrtzeit of my first rabbi, Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Carlebach ztâ€l. Many people know of Reb Elya’s famous twin brother, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, ztâ€l. In fact, I also found Reb Elya through Reb Shlomo’s reputation, but it is Reb Elya who I will always consider my first rabbi.
Reb Elya and Reb Shlomo were born in Vienna in the late &#;s to a prominent and wealthy rabbinic family. Their father, Rabbi Naftali Carlebach, moved the family to Germany for the sake of his sons’ education, but by the s, they emigrated to America, early enough to have escaped the war. Rabbi Naftali Carlebach established a shul on West 79th Street in Manhattan which is now run by his great-grandson, Reb Elya’s grandson, Rabbi Naftali Citron.
Rabbi Naftali Carlebach was not Chassidish, but when his sons grew older, they became close to the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Reb Elya married the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s first cousin, Hadasa, may Hashem bless her with a long and healthy life. They had children and he established his own shul in Staten Island.
