Imagination As A Catalyst For Social Change
The times, they are a changing and yes, they always have been. It is important to be sensitive to the spirit of the times. What is happening and where are we going to? How do we relate to the big transitions in our present world? How do we relate to developments such as digitalization, climate change, migration, urbanization and globalization? Do we approach the negative side of these developments merely as problems that have to be solved or can we also see them as opportunities, as a possibility for developing alternative perspectives, as a source of inspiration for discovering new paradigma’s in design? Is design just a problem solving practice or can we step beyond and use our imagination as a catalyst for social change? We have to transgress, to break down borders and cross boundaries. Opportunities and possibilities are found not only by considering one angle or the other, but by exploring the in-between.
And what about people? What are their opportunities in this process? Do we have respect for the existing, whether people, materials or situation? How do we look upon traditional values? Can we include traditio

Renny Ramakers looks back at how the influential design platform shook up the industry in the s in the latest talk in our ongoing collaboration with Friedman Benda for VDF.
Droog launched at Milan design week in with an exhibition of work by young Dutch designers selected by Ramakers, a writer and curator, and Gijs Bakker, a designer.
In sharp contrast to most other Milan exhibitions at the time, the objects presented were rough and unrefined, made from repurposed materials and found objects.
The exhibition caused a storm and established Droog as one of the worlds leading platforms for cutting-edge design.
It would go on to launch the careers of a generation of Dutch designers, and some of the biggest names in European design, including Marcel Wanders, Hella Jongerius, Piet Hein Eek, Tejo Remy, Richard Hutten and Jurgen Bey.

Starting with the conceptual design movement in the s, Droog, the renowned Dutch Design Collective has shaped contemporary design practices through their modern, minimalistic and innovative products. In recent years, they've expanded their scope, now spearheading urban-related projects like Open House and Design and Desires, to explore the evolving roles of our communities. What is Droog co-founder Renny's take on all the drastic changes we witness in our neighbourhoods and cities? Her reflections are coupled with photographs of her neighbourhood in Amsterdam, taken by Adrian Mećava in December
Our Relationship With Our Cities Under the Pandemic
I think that changes like the increase in the number of people moving from the city center to the suburbs have been happening for years, but with the pandemic, its been exponential. Though I’m usually based in the Netherlands, I was in this Barcelona house for three months starting in September, two of which was in the midst of a lockdown, but I was able to continue all my work from here.
The strong performance of the furniture, DIY and gardening stores shows that people are starting to become more aware of their homes and l
Design or Non-Design?
