A few iPhones, a huge TV and a Socceroos jersey—shove them all in the IKEA bag then drive away as fast as you can.
AJ wasn’t meant to be spotted at the scene. AJ wasn’t meant to get ID’d in the line up. AJ definitely wasn’t meant to go to prison. But once AJ is convicted of theft, he is placed behind the walls of an institution where his own body is stolen from him.
In a cramped communal cell, AJ will become a ‘jailbaby’—the ward of a justice system that chooses to turn a blind eye to the life-altering sexual violence committed against young men behind bars.

Thanks so much for coming to see Atlantis. I really hope you enjoy it. I’ve really enjoyed writing it and I love working at Belvoir. I’m so grateful that they’ve made this play happen.
The idea for Atlantis came from a conversation I had with an oceanographer in my grandparents’ retirement home in about rising sea levels, and something a taxi driver told me in about her belief in Atlantis. But you’ll see that in the play.
This is a story made up of a lot of different characters and stories that were part of my life over the past five or so years. All of them changed me in some way and then became part of my life story. I hope you will love them like I have loved them.
The character ‘Lally’ says in the beginning of the play that everything in it is based on truth and all the characters in it are based on real people. This is true and not true, because it is still a story. In the play, time and places have morphed. Two people from life have sometimes become one character in the play. The three women are arguing over a dress. One of them thinks it’s perfect just the way it is, another wants it to be shorter, while the other is reassuring the wearer that it looks great. There’s a familiarity and a frustration that moves freely between the strong-willed, confident women as they bicker, trading barbs and sly jokes, each one entirely sure theirs is the correct opinion. Stacked high to their left are boxes upon boxes of tomatoes. Just as the conversation is reaching a fever pitch, a man stands up and the mood changes completely—now it’s all business. One of the women’s accents drops away as they take in the director’s suggestions—a change of timing here, a step up stage there. He moves back and the scene begins again, just as compelling and passion-filled as before.
