Grew Up In The Game
As the son of a golf course superintendent born and raised in Scotland, David McLay Kidd grew up immersed in the game golf at some of the oldest and finest facilities in the world. His father’s passion rubbed off on David at an early age; as a teenager he worked at his father’s courses helping with daily maintenance as well as a few renovation projects.
His informal education gave Kidd a head start for his formal education at Writtle College on the outskirts of London where he studied Horticulture and Landscape Design. He then interned with Southern Golf Construction, Europe’s largest golf construction company, before gaining more real-world experience at a small design and construction management firm in England. There he developed his ideas for golf course design as well as the construction process.

Born and raised in Scotland, son of a Golf Course Superintendent, David has been around golf his entire life and not just any golf but the oldest and finest courses in the world. As the son of a superintendent he saw ‘behind the curtain’ what made these courses stand the test of time, what intrigued generations of Scottish golfers. David is rightful proud of his Scottish Roots, most of his relatives still live there. He wears his kilt with pride and still talks with a Scottish brogue now softened from the many years now spent in his adoptive home in Bend, Oregon, USA where he lives with his wife Tara and daughter Ailsa.
As a child, David witnessed the passion his father, Jimmy Kidd had for the game and the courses it is played across. Jimmy passed along a respect for the game, the courses and especially the history of its forebears, be they the great triumvirate of Colt, Vardon &#; Braid or the original Golf Superintendent (Head Greenkeeper) Old Tom Morris.

Architect David McLay Kidd talks Bandon Dunes and his latest work
David McLay Kidd grew up in the golf business, surrounded by the history of Scottish golf -- and some of the world's greatest courses. When David was born, his father, Jimmy Kidd, was the greenkeeper at Glasgow Golf Club. In , the elder Kidd was hired as the superintendent of the courses at Gleneagles Resort. Within a few short years, Gleneagles became the venue for the Scottish Open for eight straight years. Jimmy's boy had a front-row seat for all of it and decided early on that a life in the golf industry was to be his future.
At the tender age of 26, McLay Kidd first set foot on a large swath of ocean-front land in Oregon, and he would make a pitch to build what many consider to be the first true links course in the U.S. Two years later, he moved to Coos Bay to design and build Bandon Dunes, a masterpiece that would propel him to instant stardom in the world of golf course architecture.
