Dark Midnight When I Rise: The Story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers

Setting out initially to raise money for their university, the Fisk Jubilee Singers -- a troupe of young ex-slaves and freedmen -- ended up changing the face of American music. Despite their venues of small-town churches and train stations, and the hardships of poverty and racism, the Jubilee Singers eventually became a popular vocal group whose admirers included Ulysses S. Grant and Queen Victoria.

Recounted here for the first time is the career of the Jubilee Singers, which followed one of the most remarkable progressions in American history: from whipping post and auction block to concert hall and throne room.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers: to

Frederick Loudin, basso, became the charismatic leader of the Fisk Jubilee Singers (FJS) in Born free in Portage County, OH, Loudin proved his skills as a talented scholar, printer, and singer prior to relocating to Tennessee to serve as a music teacher. Although he was never a student at Fisk University, George White recruited the year-old Loudin to join the original FJS in late He performed with the original Singers throughout their successful European tours. After the University dissolved the group in , Loudin and White reformed the Singers in For the next three years, Loudin and White led the FJS during their tour of the United States and Canada. Following White’s resignation in , Loudin created and headed a new incarnation of the Singers. From to , Loudin’s Singers toured North America. However, by Loudin realized that a global tour was necessary to generate funds and raise awareness of African American Spirituals.

After two somewhat disappointing years in Britain, Loudin and the Singers set off on the next step of the global tour in the Antipodes. From to late , the FJS were very successful in their performances throughout Australia
