Gioachino Rossini (–) was the greatest Italian composer of his time. In the first half of his life he was astonishingly prolific, and composed nearly forty operas by the age of Of those many are key to the repertories of modern opera companies around the world.
Rossini was born in Pesaro to parents who were both musicians. In the family moved to Bologna, where Rossini sang professionally and took engagements as the maestro di cembalo in various local theatres. His first opera, Demetrio e Polibio, was commissioned in but not performed until , by which time his five next operas had received their premieres. He received his first great success with his fourth opera L’inganno felice (), which established his name around Italy. Commissions quickly followed, subsequent major works including Tancredi (), L’italiana in Algeri () and Il turco in Italia (). In he moved to Naples, the historic home of Italian opera. Born on February 29, in Pesaro, Italy, Rossini was a product of a musical household. His father, Giuseppe, was an inspector in a slaughterhouse and also taught music at the distinguished Accademia Filharmonica in Bologna. His mother, Anna, although not formally trained, was a notable soprano. His parents influence undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping his musical career.
At the tender age of six, the young Rossini was already showcasing his musical talent, playing the triangle in his father’s musical group. Gioachino Rossini was an amiable, jovial character with an almost obsessive love of fine food. He is most celebrated for his sparkling comic operas. He was nicknamed ‘Signor Crescendo’ because of the trademark intensifying of sound he used in his music, and he became the most widely acclaimed and wealthy composer of his time. But it was his many opere serie that proved to be more influential and historically significant. Their innovative style would dominate Italian opera for half a century. Rossini’s natural affinity for comedy may have stemmed from a boyhood spent playing viola in the orchestra for his parents' carnival tours. In he entered the Conservatorio di Bologna, where he developed a devotion to Mozart that remained with him for the rest of his life and is clearly evident in the operas he wrote. After his studies, he worked in local theatres, composing additional arias for other people’s operas. Eventually, in , he got a break with the sixth of his own operas. Gioachino Rossini was the most popular composer of the first half of the nineteenth century, capturing the ardent admiration of audiences throughout Europe with his thirty-nine serious, semiserious, and comic operas. Although this period of music history is now commonly referred to as the "Age of Beethoven," a far more accurate label for the era would list Rossini's name directly alongside that of his German contemporary.
