For the Irish politician, see David Sherlock (MP).
David Sherlock is a British writer and was the life partner of Graham Chapman of Monty Python, whom he met in in Ibiza.[1]
Biography[edit]
Sherlock was the inspiration for many Monty Python sketches, including "Anne Elk's Theory on Brontosauruses", and was the originator of the Python sketch "Death of Mary Queen of Scots".[citation needed] Sherlock was one of several co-authors on A Liar's Autobiography, the official Chapman memoir, and co-writer of Yellowbeard. He also co-wrote Jake's Journey (a television pilot for CBS which featured Peter Cook, Chapman and others), which was never broadcast.
After Chapman died of cancer in , Sherlock returned to his private life, but has contributed to some Python projects, most notably The Pythons Autobiography book.[2]
It was inaccurately reported that Sherlock blasted Chapman's ashes off a cliff to celebrate the millennium.[3] Another rumour was that Sherlock sprinkled Chapman's ashes on people at the 25th anniversary of Monty Python's founding in Los Angeles.[4] A further rumour was that Sherlock scattered Chapman's ashes
The Life of Graham: The Authorised Biography of Graham Chapman
Nevertheless, I thought this was a good read. As a fan of Monty Python, Graham was the one member I never warmed to, as I thought he seemed distant or stiff, or out of sorts in some way. Well, maybe he was in fact "stiff" on booze while filming! In any case, as the book points out, none of the other cast members would have made such a grand King Arthur or Brian for that matter.
I enjoyed reading about Grahams early life in post World War 2 Britain and his antics in medical school. Some of his later behavior of course gets a bit troublesome, his fascination with young school boys for example There is not a lot of focus on Monty Python and that works well in the case of this book. The man made me laugh and as a fan of the troupe, it was worth the time for me to read a bit about him.

With a pipe firmly clenched between his teeth, the outwardly calm, poised, and studious appearance of Graham Chapman (born in Leicester on 8 January ) belied a sometimes alarming propensity for unpredictable, maniacal behaviour. In this sense he can be seen as having fully lived up to the image, more than any other member of Monty Python's Flying Circus, of what was expected of someone from that particular comedy team. These contrasting aspects of his personality, however, were also successfully channelled by Chapman into his performances, to make him, according to fellow Python John Cleese, "the most talented actor of us all".
Chapman and Cleese met when they began performing in the Footlights revues while at Cambridge University (they also wrote sketches together). Following university, Chapman successfully completed medical studies to emerge as a qualified doctor, but any aspirations he may have held regarding the medical profession soon ran aground. Cleese, who was by now a writer and performer on David Frost's sketch series, The Frost Report (BBC, ), instead persuaded him to renew their writing partnership on the show.

Graham Chapman (January 8, - October 4, )
When Graham Chapman was three years old, he had the unique opportunity to witness an airplane crash up close and personal. His father, a U.K. police officer, had been called to the wreckage. Young master Chapman wandered unattended through coils of fire and smoke, gawking at body parts and other human remains.
Later in life, he'd help create Monty Python's Flying Circus. His contributions to the program as a writer and performer were vicious, insightful, philosophical, homosexual, and universally agreed upon as brilliant. His off-screen life was flamboyant and plagued by alcoholism.
Chapman attended many schools during his lifetime, with the original goal of becoming a doctor. At Cambridge, he seized an enthusiasm for performing, and he threw himself into Gilbert and Sullivan, Shakespeare, and on-campus student venues like Footlights. These early years of performing allowed Chapman to cross paths with legendary British comic personalities like David Frost, and sketch comedy groups including The Goons, The Two Ronnies, Cambridg
