Charles Doswell

Dr. Charles "Chuck" Doswell III is a former research meteorologist with the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), and is considered one of the top tornado scientists in the world. Dr. Doswell earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Oklahoma, all in meteorology. He has been a dedicated storm chaser since He has lectured on severe thunderstorms and weather forecasting at the request of the United Nations' World Meteorological Organization. He is an Adjunct Professor with the University of Oklahoma's School of Meteorology and occasionally teaches various courses, including his own course in Advanced Forecasting Techniques, at the graduate level. He wrote the benchmark paper on safe and responsible storm chasing titled "Storm Chasing with Safety, Courtesy and Responsibility." Dr. Doswell currently works as a Senior Research Scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS). A friend and colleague has challenged me to write up something about patriotism.  My usual starting point for this sort of musing is the definition of the key word - patriotism - "Patriotismor national prideis the feeling of love, devotion and sense of attachment to a homelandand alliance with other citizens who share the same sentiment."  I make no claims to deep or exceptional insight.  These are just my thoughts at the moment.

Let there be no doubt or confusion - I love my native land.  It's a nation with much natural beauty, dramatic weather, large amounts of natural resources, and (perhaps most important) a set of principles that are inspirational and form the basis for the Constitution.  This lays down the rules for a government that's intended to reward individual initiative so that, by hard work and creative insight, anyone can achieve their dreams here.  Pecuniary rewards and a successful career are not guaranteed to anyone.  Equal opportunity for all, but the outcomes of any efforts are not determined in advance.

We have received the sad news of the passing away of Charles A. Doswell III, or Chuck, as most will know him. A Honorary Member of ESSL, Chuck has been an extraordinary supporter of the European Severe Storms community, right from the first edition of the conference series that became the ECSS conferences in Toulouse in Chuck Doswell was a researcher who worked at several employers including the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma. He did not only have a strong interest in severe weather research, but also in it resulting in quantifiable, meaningful outcomes.

He had a particular talent for reducing the complexity of severe storm forecasting to its fundamentals (lift, moisture, and instability), for which he was awarded the Nikolai Dotzek Award in He always made sure that these basics were fully understood by his audience whenever he presented them in his own special style. Chuck actively supported everyone with a genuine interest in making progress in severe weather forecasting, including the founders of ESSL and the ESTOFEX project.        I'm Chuck Doswell, and I get paid to play! Really!!! I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and always dreamed of getting to see a tornado. I've been a "weather weenie" almost my whole life, although I don't really know why. Seeing and learning about tornadoes and severe storms has been a lifelong passion with me and I guessed that being a meteorologist would be a way to spend a lifetime being involved with something that really excited me. Since it was pretty obvious that you had to go to college to be a scientist, I set out along the road to becoming a meteorologist, starting with the University of Wisconsin. I didn't know very much about what meteorologists actually did, but I thought I wanted to be one, anyway.
