David “Davy” Crockett was a frontiersman, explorer, pioneer, folk hero, soldier, and politician commonly referred to in popular culture by the epithet &#;King of the Wild Frontier.&#;
David was born to John and Rebecca (Hawkins) Crockett on August 17, , in Greene County, Tennessee. The family followed Western settlement patterns, moving thrice by the time David was In , the family opened the Crockett Tavern on the road from Knoxville, Tennessee, to Abingdon, Virginia, in present-day Morristown, Tennessee. Today, the building continues to stand on the National Register of Historic Places.
Two years later, in , John Crockett hired his son out to Jacob Siler to help drive a herd of cattle to Rockbridge County, Virginia. When the job was complete, Siler tried to detain David by force, but the year-old escaped at night by walking seven miles in two hours through knee-deep snow. He eventually made his way home in late or early Soon afterward, he started school but preferred playing hooky and ran away to escape his father&#;s punishment. He did not return home for some 30 months.

Who Was Davy Crockett?
Davy Crockett was a frontiersman who later became a folk hero. In , he participated in a massacre against the Creek Indians at Tallushatchee and later earned a seat in the 21st U.S. Congress. He was re-elected to Congress twice before leaving politics to fight in the Texas Revolution. On March 6, , Crockett was killed at the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio, though the exact circumstances of his death have been the subject of debate.
Early Life
Crockett was born as David Crockett on August 17, , in Greene County, Tennessee. He was the fifth of nine children born to parents John and Rebecca (Hawkins) Crockett.
Crockett's father taught him to shoot a rifle when he was just 8 years old. As a youngster, he eagerly accompanied his older brothers on hunting trips. But, when he turned 13, his father insisted that he enroll in school. After only a few days of attendance, Crockett fought the class bully and was afraid to go back, fearing possible punishment or revenge. Instead, he ran away from home and spent more than two years wandering while honing his skills as a woodsman.

Although an already well-known historical figure thanks to his heroic last stand at the Alamo, the popular TV show and the catchy theme tune introduced Davy Crockett to a whole new audience of American children, thus turning him into a pop culture icon and the most famous frontiersman who ever lived.
