Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer known for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects in a distinctive, dramatic, and powerful manner. With a career spanning over six decades, Karsh photographed some of the most significant figures of the 20th century, including political leaders, artists, and celebrities. Early Life and Career
Yousuf Karsh was born in in Mardin, a city in present-day Turkey. He grew up during the Armenian Genocide and witnessed firsthand the atrocities inflicted upon his people. In , his family sent him to live with his uncle, George Nakash, in Canada. Nakash, a photographer himself, introduced Karsh to the world of photography and helped him secure an apprenticeship with the eminent Boston-based photographer, John H. Garo.
Under Garo's tutelage, Karsh honed his skills as a portrait photographer, developing the distinctive style that would define his career. In , he returned to Ottawa, Canada, where he opened his own photography studio. It

Little is known of Donald Fraser’s origins except that he grew up in Inverness, Scotland, where he was a schoolmate of Alexander Grant Dallas*, future governor of Rupert’s Land, and John Cameron Macdonald, later manager of the London Times. According to a contemporary, Gilbert Malcolm Sproat*, Fraser studied law in youth and then “engaged in business and made money” in Chile and California. He had gone to California in as a special correspondent for the Times to cover the gold-rush. In the spring of , when he heard from returning miners about the Fraser River rush, he decided to go to Victoria, Vancouver Island. He arrived in June armed with an introduction to Governor James Douglas* from the British consul in San Francisco.

For those who can’t bother to read the whole thing, here’s the short version: Zaid (Zaman) Hamid is a supporter of Yousuf Ali Kazzab who claimed prophethood for himself and was convicted by a court of Pakistan on those counts. Scholars of almost all sects agree that he was a kazzab and got what he deserved. Zaid Hamid waited a long time before answering any queries regarding this issue and when he finally had to come out, he did so by defending the kazzab. I never write about modern cults because they’re usually very short-lived and anyone with the most basic of religious knowledge can understand the contradictions in their ideology.
