Born on May 26, , in Los Angeles, California, Sally Ride was the elder of two daughters to Carol Joyce (Anderson), a counselor, and Dale Burdell Ride, a political science professor. From a young age, Ride exhibited a keen interest in science and athletics. She was an avid tennis player, earning a national ranking as a teenager.
Her passion for science led her to pursue studies in physics and English at Stanford University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts in English in She continued at Stanford to obtain a Master of Science in Physics in and a Ph.D. in Physics in , focusing her research on the interaction of X-rays with the interstellar medium.
