Dr Mamphela Ramphele
Mamphela Ramphele has had a celebrated career as an activist, medical doctor, academic, businesswoman and political thinker. She has held executive positions in higher education, including as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, and in international organisations and became managing director of the World Bank based in Washington, DC. She has served as chairperson of many boards and is currently a trustee of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Dr. Ramphele She was founder of the Open Society Foundation for South Africa and the Citizens Movement and is co-founder of ReimagineSA and co-president of The Club of Rome. Dr. Ramphele is the author of several books and publications on socio-economic issues in South Africa. She has received numerous national and international awards with a long list of honorary doctorates from universities globally acknowledging her scholarship and leading role in spearheading projects for marginalised people in South Africa and elsewhere.

Dr. Mamphela Ramphele&#x;s (Mam-pee-luh Ram-fay-lay) resume is pretty impressive. An activist and author, Ramphele has earned several degrees, including a medical degree, two post-graduate diplomas, a Bachelor&#x;s of Commerce in Administration, and a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology. She founded two health centers for the poor and became an expert in community development. In addition, she has served on the boards of numerous corporations, received ten honorary degrees from international universities, and assumed the highest post at a prestigious university. In Ramphele was appointed senior director of the World Bank. Given that Ramphele was born poor, black, and female in apartheid South Africa, where as she recalled in her autobiography, Across Boundaries, one white teacher often reminded her you were born to work for [whites], these accomplishments, though admirable in their own right, are nothing less than awe-inspiring.

Mamphela Ramphele was born on the 28th of December in the Bochum District in the Northern Transvaal. She attended the G. H. Frantz Secondary School but soon left for Bethesda, a boarding school. She then went to complete her matric at the Setotolwane High School. Her political awareness was awakened early in life when an uncle was detained for political activities, soon after this her elder sister also got excluded from high school for her participation in a demonstration against the formation of a republic in On completion of her matric year in , Mamphela enrolled for pre-medical courses at the University of the North.
In she was accepted into the University of Natal’s Medical School, then the only institution that allowed Black students to enrol without prior permission from the government. In , she became increasingly involved in student politics.
