Melinda Ann Judson Richards, called Linda, was born in in Potsdam, New York, and named after missionary Ann Hasseltine Judson because her father hoped she would grow up to become a missionary. The family, which included Linda's three older sisters, lived briefly in Watertown, Wisconsin, before the death of Sanford Richards when Linda was only four years old. Her mother Betsy Sinclair Richards then moved the family to Vermont, where the girls were raised in Derby and Lyndon. Richards received much of her education at an academy in Barton, Vermont. Her experiences with nursing her dying mother and her husband, who was wounded in the Civil War, inspired Richards to become a nurse. She was the first student to enroll in the first nurse training school at the New England Hospital for Women and Children in She established nurse training programs in the United States and Japan, and created the first system for keeping individual medical records for hospitalized patients.
Linda Richards was born on July 27, , the youngest daughter of Sanford Richards, an itinerant preacher who christened her Malinda Ann Judson Richards by her father, in hopes she would someday be a missionary like Ann Judson (). When Linda was only four years old, the family moved to the Wisconsin territory where her father had purchased some land, but he died of tuberculosis just six weeks after the family arrived there.

Widely recognized as America’s first professionally trained nurse, Linda Richards was born on July 27, in West Potsdam, New York. Caring for her dying mother, and then her fiancé, who was gravely wounded during the Civil War, sparked an interest in nursing, even though she had studied teaching for a year.
She first worked at Boston City Hospital (now a part of the Boston Medical Center), but received very little training. After three months of being overworked, she left. In , she became the first pupil enrolled in the first American Nurses’ training school. The institution was headed by Dr. Susan Dimock, and was located at the New England Hospital for Women and Children (now known as the Dimock Center).
Upon her graduation in , she went to New York City and became a Bellevue Hospital night supervisor. While employed there, she developed a system for maintaining individual patient records. Her system was later widely adopted in America and in the United Kingdom.
