Hyong “Ken” Kim, MD, is the Chief Executive Officer of Giatros Health. Prior to this role, Dr. Kim served as Chief Medical Officer for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). He supervised and advised in all payment and clinical model developments and provided recommendations for quality improvements and measurements for all CMMI/CMS related payment programs. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Kim completed his medical residency at Loma Linda University and holds both a BA and MD from Indiana University.

A nationally recognized academic health care leader with more than 30 years of experience, she was previously the chief health system officer for UW Medicine and the vice president for medical affairs at the University of Washington. Spisso worked at UW Medicine for more than 20 years, where she was promoted from associate administrator of patient care services to chief nursing officer to chief operating officer at Harborview Medical Center prior to being promoted in to chief health system officer for UW Medicine. Abraham is one of the most blessed people in the Bible. Although Scripture is not a comprehensive history of humans it does, however, chronicle the relationship of one man and his descendants with the Creator of the Universe. Ultimately, it is a record of how God has and will bless mankind through the life of the next person in our timeline.

What does a successful hospital look like to you and how does UCLA Health achieve that goal?
A successful hospital is really the way our patients and families view us. Many times, we can all think we're doing everything right, but unless we really see and hear that from the lens of the patient and the families, I think it's easy to miss the mark. So, for me, the most important thing is are our patients happy with their care? Are they satisfied? Do they feel they're getting the best quality and the best outcomes and, most importantly, [is] our staff caring for them with kindness and empathy? I think that's what we're most known for at UCLA Health—patients expect us to know what we're doing, but they really want to know that we're giving them that individualized care, listening to them and making them a participant in their outcomes.
You have a background as a registered nurse. How has that hands-on experience informed your work as CEO running the UCLA Hospital System?
Starting my career as a registered nurse, working in critical care and a variety of other areas, really helped me understand the needs and what patients expect from their health care team.
