IID to vote Monday on land deal with developer for huge 'inland port' near Salton Sea
The Imperial Irrigation District board will vote Monday on a deal that could see it sell square miles of agricultural land between Niland and Calipatria to Moreno Valley-based developer Iddo Benzeevi for $21 million. The businessman, whose previous projects have sparked controversy, envisions a massive "inland port" for the land.
Benzeevi said the depot would receive goods from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles — the nation's busiest — by rail and truck, process them for use onsite in manufacturing, or quickly distribute them across the western United States and Mexico.
The parcels, once owned by the Bass brothers of Texas and currently leased for farming, sit along rail lines in the impoverished north end of Imperial County. Benzeevi told the irrigation district board in a presentation this month that the site could create 30, jobs and generate billions of dollars in revenue.

The Imperial Irrigation District board of directors voted this week to approve an option to sell 2, acres near Niland and Calipatria to a Moreno Valley-based developer for the construction of an “inland port.”
The board postponed action on the deal in December and called for more information and new terms, which IID staff presented before Tuesday's vote. By a vote, the board approved the amended deal, with President Norma Sierra Galindo as the lone vote in opposition.
Erik Ortega was one of three directors who votedin December to postpone action but ultimately voted in favor. “I had many concerns,” he said of the initially proposed deal. “The agreement has many safeguards as well for IID, so this deal isn’t one-sided anymore.”

Despite a large show of public support for a massive "inland port" project near the Salton Sea, the Imperial Irrigation District on Monday delayed action on a deal that could see the agency sell 2, acres for the development.
Iddo Benzeevi, a Moreno Valley-based developer whose projects elsewhere have sparked controversy, has offered the district $21 million for the land near Niland and Calipatria, if he meets a series of benchmarks and conditions.
"I'm not comfortable moving forward with this today," said IID board member Alex Cardenas, who led the vote to postpone action. Board member James Hanks, who represents the impoverished area where the project would be built, opposed the delay.
Cardenas said he and other board members had received numerous emails that were critical of Benzeevi's business practices. He said he wanted time to vet those, and also wanted to ensure that Imperial County and local city governments unanimously support the proposed development.
