Who was Gabrielle Roth?
Gabrielle Roth was an Americandancer and musician in the worldmusic and trancedance genres, with a specialinterest in shamanism. She created the 5Rhythms approach to movement in the late s; there are now hundreds of 5Rhythms teachersworldwide who use her approach in their work.
Roth worked at the KripaluCenter for Yoga & Health and at the OmegaInstitute for Holistic Studies. She also founded an experimentaltheatrecompany in New York, and wrotethree books, created over twentyalbums of trancedancemusic with her band The Mirrors, and directed or has been the subject of ten videos.

At a dinner gathering once, I seated my childhood friend Perry next to my mentor-in-chief, Gabrielle Roth, whom he had never met. Gabrielle’s husband, Robert Ansell, was sitting at the end of the table. Perry later told me that he had been very uncomfortable talking to Gabrielle, because, "She was looking at me in a way that only lovers have looked at me, and her husband was sitting right there.”

It was true. Gabrielle had a razor-sharp, penetrating vision of each person she encountered, and saw everyone as a lover, a soul, a magical spirit; an artist, a dancer, a poet; an innocent child and a person of great hidden power and mystery. She had a natural ability to pierce through false veneers of personality, social formalities and layers of self-protection and fear, straight through to the heart of people; to the heart of me.

Gabrielle Roth was one of Esalen’s most popular and enduring workshop leaders. As a young dancer in her twenties, she arrived at Esalen in the mid-Sixties and within a short time was invited by Fritz Perls to teach movement to his Gestalt Therapy groups, and soon after began running the Esalen massage program.
Gabrielle had spent the previous ten years of her life teaching movement to children, elders, people-at-risk, and the disabled, and used her time at Esalen to further hone and develop what would eventually evolve into the worldwide 5Rhythms™ movement practice.
She would eventually migrate to the East coast, where she founded The Moving Center Inc., the vision and vehicle of her body of work. Over the years, Gabrielle’s unique perspective and passion stretched from the dance floor to the pages of three best-selling books: Maps To Ecstasy, Sweat Your Prayers, and Connections.
