What It Means To Be A Real Steel Magnolia

A Steel Magnolia is a woman who exemplifies both traditional femininity as well as uncommon fortitude. (Wikionary).   The term Steel Magnolia is usually used to describe a woman who has faced adversity full on with grace, poise, and dignity.

I have seen the movie, Steel Magnolias, many times.  I originally saw it in the theater when it debuted  in with my mom and my aunts, all Steel Magnolias.  When I was a child and young woman, I watched each of them face an assortment of adversities and show me how it was done. They probably had no idea that I was watching them.  They didn&#;t whine about their problems; they just handled their problems.  It is such a gift to a girl to have strong female role models.

When my grandmother had a heart attack, I saw them take shifts at the hospital for three weeks.  When she passed away early on Christmas morning, I watched my mom leave to meet them at the hospital at a.m., come home to open gifts with her family, and later that day go to the funeral home to plan a funeral.  I watched my mom and my aunts handle themselves with dignity at the visitation and the funeral.  I know my mother was broken

Robert Harling's Steel Magnolias was initially written as an off-Broadway play as a way to grieve his sister's premature death and give her son a way to feel connected to her life that he was never able to see. But when Hollywood came calling, they knew that not only did they have a box office hit on their hands, but also a story that would touch millions over the years.

Director Herbert Ross did an incredible job in telling the story of the group of women at a beauty parlor in small-town Louisiana. The close-knit community is there for each other when they lose one of their own and deal with the circle of life together.

Decades after the film was released in , here's what the cast is up to.

Parton has continued acting over the years appearing in Wild Texas Wind, Unlikely Angel, Blue Valley Songbird&nbs

Olympia Dukakis: The Life and Career of the Shining Star of Stage and Screen

Olympia Dukakis could not be put into a box. The award-winning actress, who passed away in at the age of 89, was more than just the characters she played on the screen. The Massachusetts native was an author as well, and has additionally been recognized for her advocacy for women’s rights.

Before we saw her in famous films like Moonstruck (), Steel Magnolias () and In the Land of Women (), Dukakis enjoyed a long and illustrious career on the stage.

While still in Massachusetts, the actress built up her resume by taking part in numerous theatrical productions before making the big leap to the one and only, New York City.

Upon arriving in the city, Olympia Dukakis cultivated her craft, even winning an Obie Award for Distinguished Performance for her role in Man Equals Man (a.k.a. A Man’s A Man) off-Broadway. Before long, however, she began to focus some of her attention to work on the screen.

The actress’ first credited role came in a episode of The Doctors and the Nurses. From there, she could be seen across both television and film

The film Steel Magnolias, about a group of small-town Louisiana women and how they cope with a tragedy within their clan, is a time capsule of the eighties: the hair is big, the shoulder pads are wide, the crackly titles are slightly out of focus.

But while some of the film’s more nostalgic aesthetics could do with a trip to the town’s beauty parlour for a touch-up, the universal themes of friendship, sisterhood and humour are truly timeless.

Based on writer Robert Harling’s real-life experience of losing his sister, as the title suggests, the six formidable women at the heart of the film are both delicate as a magnolia flower but tough as steel, and are played by an all-star ensemble cast, including four Oscar winners - Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine.

Equal parts uplifting and heartbreaking, the film is laced with hilarious one-liners, which, combined with the stellar cast – completed by Splash star Daryl Hannah and showbiz royalty Dolly Parton – is the reason it continues to win over new generations of fans three decades after its cinematic release.
