Assia Djebar was born Fatima-Zohra Imalayen in Cherchell, Algeria on August 4, She published her first novel, La Soif, under pen name Assia Djebar in , followed by her second novel, Les Impatients, in In that same year, Djebar married Walid Garn and worked toward advanced degree in history at University of Algiers.
In , Djebar published her novel Les Enfants du Nouveau Monde, and Les Alouettes Naives followed in Rouge l’Aube, a play written in collaboration with husband Garn, was performed at the third Pan-African Cultural Festival held in Algiers in She published a volume of poetry, Poems pour l’Algerie heureuse, in as well.
Djebar was known for her cinematic work, and in , she directed her first film, La Nouba des femmes du Mont Chenoua. In , she directed her second film, La Zerda ou les chants de l’oubli, a documentary juxtaposing French newsreels of World War I and II and Algerian women singing traditional songs. She followed this up by publishing a short story collection, Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement, in , and soon after married Malek Alloula, another Algerian writer. Assia Djebar , nom de plume de Fatima-Zohra Imalayène, née le 30 juin à Ouled Hamou (département d’Alger) près d'Ain Bessem dans l’actuelle wilaya de Bouira(Algérie) et décédée le 6 février à Paris, est une femme de lettres algérienne d'expression française.
Auteur de nombreux romans,nouvelles, poèmes et essais, elle a aussi écrit pour le théâtre et a réalisé plusieurs films. Assia Djebar est considérée comme l'un des auteurs les plus célèbres et les plus influents du Maghreb. Elle est élue à l'Académie française en , devenant ainsi la première auteure nord-africaine à y être reçue.
Assia Djebar naît dans une famille de la petite bourgeoisie traditionnelle algérienne. Son père, Tahar Imalhayène est un instituteur (issu de l’École normale d’instituteurs de Bouzaréa) originaire de Gouraya. Sa mère, Bahia Sahraoui appartient à la famille des Berkani (issue des populations berbères chenouis Ait Menasser du Dahra), dont un aïeul a combattu aux côtés d’Abd El-Kader et l'a suivi en exil.
